Top Musicals on Netflix Streaming

Unfortunately most of my favorite musicals are no longer available on Netflix. I haven’t had time to watch all of the below films but they are in my queue and I plan on checking them out in the future. Plus I’ve heard good things about them.

Footloose (2011)

I have not watched this remake yet. I do enjoy Julianne Hough and dance movies (ala Step Up though). Hot Donna told me it was decent and I will eventually get to watching it. It’s a remake of the 80′s original. You probably know the gist, teens aren’t allowed to dance in some weird hick town, so they rebel by dancing.

Velvet Goldmine (1998)

Yes, I fucking adore Velvet Goldmine. I went into it with a love of Ewan McGregor and gay men and just came out someone even more awesome, if that’s possible. It taught me about glam rock and Oscar Wilde and accessorizing with copious amounts of glitter. Plot, you ask? Christian Bale plays a young reporter tasked to find out what happened to a supposedly dead bisexual glam rock star Brian Slade (basically a fictionalized version of David Bowie). Yes, that’s Ewan rocking out above as Curt Wild (inspired by Iggy Pop). The amazing cast also includes Eddie Izzard.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Have you ever been inside of a Hot Topic? Yes, then you’ve probably seen Jack Skellington before. So you know his visage but have you seen the movie? Well hopefully, it’s been out for fucking ever and it’s amazing. Tim Burton’s stop motion puppet musical is a gothic love tale about Halloween Town. Halloween Town is home to a bunch of awesome ghoulies. The movie is about how the sweet Jack Skellington stumbles onto Christmas Town and tries to bring their traditions back to his town. He also meets Sally, whom he falls for.

Footloose (1984)

Yes, this is the original Footloose starring Kevin Bacon. Yes, it’s about a town that’s outlawed dancing. I was born a year before this film’s release. I grew up with it being overplayed on TV and Bacon even goofing on his performance on other shows. So I’m not like a big fan or anything but he sure could dance.

The Muppet Movie (1979)

Plot: “Kermit and his new found friends trek across America to find success in Hollywood, but a frog-legs merchant is after Kermit.” (via IMDB.com) I haven’t watched The Muppet Movie since I was a small child but Miss Piggy is an idol of mine so I really need to get on that.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

Plot: “A hapless inventor finally finds success with a flying car, which a dictator from a foreign government sets out to take for himself.” (via imdb.com) I’m never watching this movie again. That’s not an insult, I just watched it so much as a child that I couldn’t do it again. Yeah, my dad is a big Dick Van Dyke fan.

Carmen Jones (1954)

Plot: “Love, passion, betrayal and tragedy. Carmen Jones is an adaptation of Bizet’s legendary opera, Carmen. It tells the story of a young, free spirited woman called Carmen Jones whose great beauty is the object of many men’s desires. However, Carmen sets her sights on young army officer Joe, who is engaged to his sweetheart, Cindy Lou. Joe quickly succumbs to Carmen’s charms , forsaking his Cindy Lou, thus beginning the tragic love story.” (via IMDB.com) It seems wrong that I’ve never gotten around to watching this as it’s considered a classic film but I’m so behind on anything pre-1960s. Not a great excuse, I know.
Stars Dorothy Dandridge.

There’s No Business Like Show Business (1954)

Plot: “Molly and Terry Donahue, plus their three children, are The Five Donahues. Son Tim meets hat-check girl Vicky and the family act begins to fall apart.” (via IMDB.com). Okay it’s not really my cup of tea but you know I love Marilyn Monroe. She performs the following songs in this film, Lazy, Heat Wave and After You Get What You Want, You Don’t Want It.

A Star Is Born (1937)
star born

Plot: “A young woman comes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, but achieves them only with the help of an alcoholic leading man whose best days are behind him.” (via IMDB.com) Okay, this is one of three versions of A Star Is Born and I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve only seen the Streisand version because, c’mon I love her. I am totally going to give this one a try though. In case you are curious, no I haven’t seen Garland’s version yet either, which is insane.
